What we found and what we did

This Blacklick homeowner called us about leaks around the chimney and a bathroom vent. At the inspection in September 2026, the metal flashing around the stone chimney had been patched, painted and sealed over, with gaps at the base and moss holding moisture on the shingles beside it. The bath vent on the roof was also due to be replaced.

The repair plan was a full chimney flashing replacement with a cricket: remove the shingles around the chimney, tear off the old step and counter flashing and the old underlayment, build a cricket on the uphill side to divert water around the chimney (Ohio's residential code calls for one on chimneys more than 30 inches wide), then install new ice and water barrier, flashing and shingles. The job also included a new bath vent and a roof tune-up, sealing nail pops and the existing pipe jack sleeves and flashings.

When the crew opened the roof at the chimney in mid-October 2026, the old plank decking beside it had rotted through, so it was replaced with new boards before the cricket, ice and water barrier and flashing went on. The new shingles are IKO Cambridge in Harvard Slate, chosen to sit close to the existing roof. As with any repair on an older roof, weathering means new shingles won't be an exact match.

Why chimney flashing fails

Chimneys are one of the most common places a roof leaks. Flashing that has been patched and sealed over can look fine from the ground while water gets behind it, and over time that water rots the decking underneath. A cricket keeps water and debris from collecting on the uphill side of a wide chimney. See our Columbus roof repair service and roof repair in Blacklick.
