Wood chimney chase leak repair in Columbus

A completed Roof Revivers chimney repair, shown with crew photos.

Columbus, Ohio · October 2024

What we found and what we did

The homeowner had a water leak at the rear chimney, a wood-framed chimney chase clad in vertical boards. On inspection the crew found many gaps in the chimney siding and rotted wood. The repair replaced rotted 1x12 and 1x6 trim boards, which were painted to match before install, and sealed the gaps and seams with gray caulk.

Why wood chimney chases leak

A framed chimney chase is siding and trim built around a metal flue. When trim boards split or rot, or seams open up, rain gets behind the boards and runs down into the house, often well away from the chimney itself. Fixing it means replacing the rotted wood, not just caulking over it, and checking the flashing where the chase meets the roof.
