Hail can bruise shingles in ways you cannot see from the ground. Here is how to check safely, and how we help with a free inspection, tarping and your insurance adjuster.

What hail does to a roof

Hail does not always leave obvious damage. Depending on stone size, wind and the age of the roof, it can:

  • Bruise asphalt shingles, leaving soft spots where the mat underneath is cracked
  • Knock granules loose, exposing the asphalt to sun and speeding up wear
  • Crack or split older, brittle shingles
  • Dent metal vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts
  • Crack skylight lenses, plastic vents and siding

Some hail damage leaks right away. Much of it does not, and only shows up as wear or leaks later. That is why a close inspection matters more than a glance from the street.

How to check for hail damage safely from the ground

Please stay off the roof. You can learn a lot without a ladder:

  1. Wait until the storm has fully passed and watch for downed power lines.
  2. Look at the soft metals: dents on gutters, downspouts, mailbox, AC unit fins and car hoods are good clues hail was big enough to matter.
  3. Check downspout outlets and splash blocks for piles of shingle granules.
  4. Walk around the house and look for missing, lifted or cracked shingles and damaged siding or window screens.
  5. Inside, check ceilings and the attic for new stains or drips.
  6. Take dated photos of everything you see, and note the date and time of the storm.

Not every hailstorm damages every roof. If you see clues like these, a free inspection is the surest way to know.

Free hail damage inspection

Inspections and estimates are free. We check shingles, vents, flashing, gutters and skylights, photograph what we find, and tell you plainly whether there is damage worth taking to your insurer. If there is not, we will say so.

Tarping if water is getting in

When a storm opens up your roof, the first job is keeping water out. We offer storm tarping to cover damaged areas until a permanent repair or replacement can be made.

We work with any insurance adjuster

If wind, hail or a fallen limb caused the damage, your homeowner’s policy may help. We document the damage with photos, can tarp an active leak to prevent more damage, and will meet any insurance adjuster on site. Your policy and your adjuster decide what is covered; we will not promise a claim outcome. Check your policy for its reporting deadline. Learn more on our insurance claim help page.

Questions we hear

How do I know if hail damaged my roof in Columbus?

Dents on gutters, downspouts, vents, AC units or cars, and granules collecting at downspouts, are good clues. A free inspection with photos is the surest way to know.

Should I get on the roof to look?

No. Check from the ground and inside your attic, take photos, and let a roofer handle the roof itself.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes. Hail damage inspections and estimates are free.

Can you tarp my roof after hail?

Do you work with my insurance company?

Yes. We work with any insurance adjuster and can meet them at your home. Your insurer decides what is covered.

Does all hail damage leak right away?

No. Bruised shingles and lost granules often do not leak at first, which is why an inspection after a hailstorm is worth it.
