Roof Insurance Claim Denied? What to Do Next

A denial is not always the last word. Here are the steps homeowners in Ohio and North Carolina can take.

What should I do if my roof insurance claim is denied?

Short answer: Read the denial and the policy provision it cites, get a free independent roof inspection, ask your insurer for a re-inspection with documentation, use appraisal if you dispute the amount, and contact the Ohio or North Carolina Department of Insurance if needed. Your policy and adjuster decide coverage.

A denial is not always the last word. Here are the steps homeowners in Ohio and North Carolina can take.

Step by step

  1. Read the denial letter. In Ohio, Ohio Adm. Code 3901-1-54 says an insurer may not deny a claim on a specific policy provision, condition or exclusion unless the denial references it.
  2. Get your full policy and read the cited provision.
  3. Get an independent inspection. We inspect free and photograph what we find.
  4. Ask for a re-inspection with new photos or documentation.
  5. Consider appraisal if you agree damage is covered but disagree on the amount. North Carolina’s standard policy provisions in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 58-44-16 include appraisal; check your policy.
  6. Contact your state insurance department: the Ohio Department of Insurance roof insurance guide or the N.C. Department of Insurance homeowners insurance page.
  7. Watch deadlines. Your policy sets the time to sue; in NC the standard provisions say within three years after the loss.
