Canal Winchester, Ohio · August 2025
The Canal Winchester homeowner had two skylights that needed to come out. The crew ordered two fixed skylights with flashing kits and CertainTeed Landmark Burnt Sienna shingles to match the existing roof. On install day in August 2025, the shingles around both units came off, the old skylights came out, and the plywood around the openings showed rot — two sheets of plywood were replaced before the new units went in.
The new skylights were flashed in place, then the surrounding area was shingled back with CertainTeed Landmark Burnt Sienna. The crew used three extra bundles beyond the original order once the opened roof showed how much shingle work the rot repair needed. The homeowner later walked the finished roof and said the work looked great.
Skylights fail two ways: the seal in the glass unit breaks down, or the flashing where the unit meets the roof wears out and lets water under the shingles. Once water gets past the flashing, the plywood next to the curb softens and can rot through, which is what we found when these two units came out. Replacing the glass alone does not fix that — the lasting repair is a new unit with new flashing and sound decking underneath.
