Roof leak and decking repair in Pickerington

A Pickerington leak repair on the back of the house: the crew opened the roof where the leak was, beside a valley at the gutter edge, replaced the water-damaged decking and put the slope back watertight, shown with before, during and after crew photos.

What we found and what we did

This Pickerington homeowner found us on Google about a roof leak. At the inspection in late July 2026 we traced it to the back of the house, on the slope that drains into a valley right at the gutter edge, and marked the area to open up (shown in red below).

The repair plan was specific: open the roof in a section about 5 feet by 5 feet starting at the gutter edge and moving up, remove the shingles, felt and ice and water barrier as needed, inspect the decking and replace whatever was damaged, then install new ice and water barrier and synthetic roofing felt and new GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Pewter Gray, and clean up and haul away the debris.

The crew did the work in September 2026. With the shingles lifted, a fastener in the leak area had water staining around it, and the old board decking next to the valley was water-damaged, so the crew cut it out down to the rafters and installed new decking. New ice and water barrier and synthetic underlayment went over the deck, and the new Pewter Gray shingles were worked back into the existing roof and down to the valley. On the follow-up call after the repair, the homeowner said the crew had shown them what was causing the leak, and that there were no leaks after rain that weekend.

Why leaks start next to valleys and gutter edges

A valley carries the water from two slopes, and all of it runs off at the bottom, where the valley meets the gutter. If water gets under the shingles there, through a fastener, a gap or old underlayment, it sits on the decking every time it rains. The decking can be damaged well before a stain shows up inside. Opening the area, replacing the wood that is damaged and putting ice and water barrier back at the bottom of the slope fixes the cause, not just the stain.
